Learning technology often starts with acquiring knowledge. You watch tutorials. You read documentation. You take courses. You learn concepts, memorise syntax, and understand how different tools and technologies work.

But at some point, there is a gap you have to cross, which is: Knowing how something works is not the same as knowing how to use it. Ultimately, this is where practical experience becomes important.

In the tech industry, professionals are rarely valued simply because they know a concept. They are valued because they can use what they know to solve problems, build things, make decisions, and contribute to real work.

So, why does practical experience matter so much?

1. It turns knowledge into skill

You can understand how a technology works without necessarily being able to use it effectively. For example, you might understand the concepts behind databases, cybersecurity, software development, data analysis, or networking. But when you are given an actual problem to solve, you may discover that applying those concepts requires a different level of understanding.

Practice is what helps bridge that gap. The more you apply what you learn, the more familiar you become with using your knowledge in different situations.

Learning tells you what something is and how it works. Practice teaches you what to do with it. And that distinction is important because the tech industry ultimately needs people who can apply knowledge, not just possess it.

2. Real problems are different from tutorials

Learning materials often give you problems with a clear beginning and end. Real-world problems are rarely that straightforward.

You may encounter incomplete information, unexpected errors, changing requirements, technical limitations, or several possible ways to approach the same problem.

Sometimes, you won't even know what the problem is at first. Practical experience puts you in these situations. You begin learning how to investigate problems, search for information, test different approaches, make decisions, and adapt when your first solution doesn't work.

This is one of the reasons practical experience is so valuable: it introduces you to the uncertainty that comes with real work.

3. It develops your problem-solving ability

Technology is constantly changing. New tools emerge. Technologies evolve. Systems become more complex. The specific tools you learn today may not be the same tools you use several years from now.

This means that a tech professional cannot depend entirely on memorising technologies. You also need to know how to figure things out. Practical experience helps develop this ability.

When something breaks in a project, you have to investigate it. When your approach doesn't work, you have to reconsider it. When you don't know how to implement something, you have to research it.

Over time, these experiences help you develop the ability to solve problems even when you don't already know the answer. And this ability is what certifies you as a professional with hands-on experience in the industry.

4. It gives you evidence of what you can do

There is a difference between knowing the name and features of a programming language and being able to show something you built with the language.

The same technique applies across the industry. Projects, contributions, experiments, internships, freelance work, hackathons, and other practical experiences can demonstrate how you apply your knowledge. This is particularly important when developing your professional identity.

Your learning tells people what you have studied. Your practical work gives them evidence of what you can do. And sometimes, that evidence can communicate your capabilities better than a list of technologies ever could.

5. It prepares you for working with other people

Practical experience isn't only about technical skills. When you work on real projects, you also begin to encounter the professional side of technology.

You may have to communicate an idea to someone who isn't technical. You may need to document your work. You may receive feedback and change your approach. You may have to work with someone else's code or collaborate with people who have different responsibilities. You may have to meet a deadline or work within a particular constraint.

These experiences teach you something that tutorials often cannot: that technology is built and used by people.

Being technically capable is important, but being able to communicate, collaborate, adapt, and work within real-world constraints is also part of becoming a tech professional.

This is an important distinction. You don't need to wait until you are "good enough" before you start building. In fact, practical experience is part of how you become good enough.
